Taller clear heights for new warehousing needs

Taller clear heights for new warehousing needs

The rise of e-commerce has brought a movement toward taller clear heights for increasing warehouse efficiency. Tenants have thought cubic space more than overall square footage in their facilities. Since some years ago, above 30-foot clear heights have been the mainstream in the industry.

The concept of “building’s clear height” is defined as the usable height to which a tenant can store its product on racking. This term is measured below any obstructions such as joists, lights or sprinklers. Constantly companies are looking for taking advantage of your resources and the space in their facilities is especially important for their logistics activities.

The vertical expansion to taller clear heights is based on the efficiencies in utilizing more cubic space rather than a larger square area. Taller clear heights allow companies to store more palletized product, which means to lower occupancy costs per square foot.

The height of the pallet influences which rack size is needed and, according to reports, 50% of the market uses the height of pallets of 64-inch (other common sizes include 56-and 72-inch pallets). Structural pallet racks are designed with spacing between racks at 64, 72 and 80 inches. This means taller clear heights facilities can accommodate between four and six pallets. This kind of structural analysis allows companies to plan their operations budget and to take adequate decisions for the future.
